GUARD UNITS
O P T I O N A L R U L E
Rationale

Using a D6 as the game’s core mechanic necessarily limits how finely differences in quality between units can be represented.

With such a narrow scale, historically verydifferent troops may end up in the same category.

This is particularly apparent with Guard units, the crème de la crème—the elite of their respective armies’ elite. Yet the system may represent them almost identically to other excellent elite units, such as French or Russian cuirassiers.

The following rule introduces this distinction subtly, without changing the system’s fundamental mechanics.

The Guard is not stronger; it is more reliable.

Rule

Whenever a Guard unit, regardless of its MR, rolls a D6 in melee, its player may reroll the die after seeing the result.

If the player chooses to reroll, the second result must be used and is final, even if it is worse than the first. A rerolled die may never be rerolled again.

Opposed Rolls

When two units make opposed rolls, the Guard player must decide whether to keep the first result or reroll before seeing the opponent’s roll.

The player may not wait to see the enemy’s result before deciding.

If two Guard units face each other, both players must make their decisions simultaneously or in secret before revealing their final rolls.

Combates enfrentados
